Jorge Santiago, documentary wedding photographer currently based in Pittsburgh, PA. “I fell in love with photography when I was in high school and it has been a permanent presence in my live ever since. I have worked as a photojournalist for a local newspaper, where I chased news with a camera all day long, and been a black and white darkoom manager, in charge of developing and enlarging fine art black and white photos taken by renowned photographers. I believe these two experiences have shaped my current approach to photography: I have the speed and energy of a photojournalist and the aesthetic care and precision of a fine art photographer. I document stories by capturing moments and the context in which they occur without forgetting the importance of technique.”
Jorge Santiago, originally from Oaxaca, Mexico, first came into contact with photography at the age of 15, during a workshop entitled “La Mirada Interior” (The Inner Gaze) which attempted to introduce the medium of photography into the indigenous communities in Oaxaca state.
In 2007 he moved to Beijing, China, where he documented the radical transformations in the city and its people in light of the impending Olympics. Upon his return in 2008, he was accepted a scholarship to document the way in which basketball functions to reinforce relationships between Oaxacan villages in the Sierra Juárez and Mexican migrant workers living in the United States.
